3D-FDTD Modeling of Angular Spread for the Extraordinary Transmission Spectra of Metal Films with Arrays of Subwavelength Holes
نویسندگان
چکیده
Extraordinary transmission through a metal film with an array of subwavelength holes (mesh) can be modeled effectively using three-dimensional finite difference time domain (3D-FDTD) calculations. A simple 3DFDTD model, where a plane wave of light at perpendicular incidence with no angular spread interacts with a periodic repeating mesh, models the shape and location of the transmission resonance peaks qualitatively but not quantitatively. The simple 3D-FDTD model gives peaks that are tall, sharp, and red-shifted compared to experimental measurements using a benchtop Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer. It was discovered that the simple model does not account accurately for diffraction order scattering by the mesh or the angular spread of the actual FTIR beam. This work describes a more sophisticated model that accounts for these factors and agrees quantitatively with experimental FTIR results.

Extraordinary transmission of metal films with arrays of subwavelength holes.
Metal films with patterns of subwavelength holes (grids or meshes) have interesting optical properties including the extraordinary transmission effect. These optically thick metal films transmit more radiation than that incident on the holes owing to the excitation of surface plasmons (SPs). Meshes present a new and simple way to excite SPs at perpendicular incidence (i.e., without the need to ...
متن کاملInfrared Sensitivity of Plasmonic Metal Films with Hole Arrays to Microspheres In and Out of the Holes
Both experiments and finite difference time domain (FDTD) calculations show that infrared (IR) absorption spectroscopy and IR transmission resonances of metal films with arrays of subwavelength holes (meshes) are more sensitive to material in the holes of the mesh than to material on the front or back surfaces of the mesh. IR extinction spectra of isolated, individual latex (polystyrene) sphere...
متن کاملPropagation lengths of surface plasmon polaritons on metal films with arrays of subwavelength holes by infrared imaging spectroscopy.
Metal films with arrays of subwavelength holes (mesh) exhibit extraordinary transmission resonances to which many attribute a role for surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs); others debated this point. Experimental measurements of propagation lengths are presented under conditions that pertain to the use of SPPs for surface spectroscopy. The lateral extent of electromagnetic propagation along the me...
متن کاملOptical transmission through circular hole arrays in optically thick metal films.
In this paper we extend our theoretical treatment of the extraordinary optical transmission through hole arrays to the case of circular holes and beyond the subwavelength limit. Universal curves for the optical transmission in different regimes of the geometrical parameters defining the array are presented. Finally, we further develop the statement by showing that extraordinary transmission phe...
متن کاملStrong influence of hole shape on extraordinary transmission through periodic arrays of subwavelength holes.
We show that extraordinary light transmission of periodic subwavelength hole arrays, generally attributed to surface-plasmon resonances, is strongly influenced by the hole shape. Both experiments and calculations, based on a Fourier modal method, demonstrate that a shape change from circular to rectangular increases the normalized transmission by an order of magnitude while the hole area decrea...
